I don't have the internet at home so I wasn't able to browse online too much to get ideas besides for the time I had in class or when I did stop to use a computer at the college. But, nonetheless I am very satisfied with my final work. I decided to create a movie poster for a short homemade movie that me and a couple high school friends made about three years ago. I thought that this would be a perfect opportunity to come up with something original rather than to create a poster for a movie that was not even made by me. The movie is very cheesy... funny, homemade, and cheesy. I figured that a cartoon look would match well with the style of the movie. So, the process began- I would try and come up with something from scratch using drawing techniques and Photoshop.
The beginning of my process consisted of sketching out a layout for the poster. A design hit me right away, and I stuck with that idea until the end. I wanted silhouette figures and I wanted to incorporate the main plot of the movie- a killer who carries around balloons, kills people, and leaves a balloon behind with the dead body. I started with the sketches, which I sketched using pen. I then created the background using Photoshop ( the yellow background plus the black path). I chose to make the path off center to create movement or a sense of drawing the viewer in and through the picture. Since I do not have a scanner, I took pictures of the sketches that I drew out with my camera. I edited all of my sketched pictures to grayscale and increased the curves and contrast to create a better contrast of black and white in order to get the black outline of the letters. Then I filled the title font with red paint on paint(program) since I couldn't find where to do that on Photoshop. The coloring wasn't perfectly filled in and there were a lot of missing spots that I then filled in and colored using Photoshop. I used Photoshop for the rest of the process. I used the line tool and found a square shape which I used for the doorway. The font that I chose to use for the credited people was MS GOTHIC. I stretched the font a little by going to 'edit' and free transform. I did this with my title and silhouette characters also... to put them in place. The background, which says balloon killer in light font, was done simply by adding the text and going over to the 'layers' option which is on a tool bar on the right side of the screen. I went under the option of 'normal' and changed it to 'overlay'. I thought that I was finished with the poster until I got a little feedback. That feedback was to add something extra to the black path. I decided to do blood. I am very satisfied with my end results. The path of red blood adds a lot more to the picture considering that the balloon killer goes around killing people and leaving behind a balloon with the dead body. I feel like the red blood path verifies that and gives the viewer a better understanding of the movie.
